In this episode of Conversation with Jason (which aired on April 17th, 2024, on our Instagram Live feed), Executive Director of Napa Green, the sustainability certification focused on climate and community resilience, Anna Brittain joins Tablas Creek Vineyard Proprietor Jason Haas. Jason and Anna discuss her path from growing up in Napa Valley but outside the wine industry to studying environmental science at Williams College (the same alma mater as Jason) to eventually returning home to help draft the initial rules for the Napa Green standards. They talk about the biggest challenges (climate change and social justice) and opportunities (packaging) for wine, and how Napa Green’s six pillars of sustainability help growers look holistically at their operations and find areas to improve. They talk about Napa Rise and the sorts of events that can inspire real change. They dive into Napa Green’s recent decision to require the phaseout of glyphosate and Anna shares why they didn’t do it earlier and how it’s been received. And they look into the future and try to identify what the next frontier in sustainability will be.
